The Importance of Efficient Materials Handling in Mining
15 Aug 2024
Materials handling is a critical part of any mining operation, but for many, it's viewed as a necessary expense rather than a strategic investment.
Most mining companies focus on basic functionalities and cost-saving measures rather than innovation and efficiency, and they tend to stick with traditional methods and equipment due to the perceived risks and costs associated with new technologies.
What many fail to realise is that by adopting advanced materials handling solutions, they can reduce downtime, minimise risks, and improve operational efficiency, delivering a healthy return on their strategic investment.
Materials handling specialists Backsafe Australia use human-centred thinking to optimise mine sites. Boasting an extensive range of material handling equipment specifically designed for the physical demands of the mining sector, we deliver the advice, products, systems and site-wide solutions companies need to thrive.
In this article, we explore the critical role of efficient materials handling in optimising mining operations, boosting productivity and ensuring worker safety.
Why efficiency is so important in mining operations
Mining companies are facing increasing pressure to improve their operational efficiency, reduce costs, and minimise the impact they're having on the environment.
By implementing effective material handling equipment and strategies, companies can reduce the time and energy required to move material, increasing productivity and reducing downtime. This allows mining companies to hit their production targets and remain profitable.
Efficient material handling also enhances safety for mining personnel. Handling material, especially in mining, is inherently hazardous, but implementing effective strategies and using appropriate equipment minimises the risk of accidents, ensuring a safer working environment.
The key problems mining companies face with materials handling
When handling bulk materials, mining companies face several challenges that can have a significant impact on their operations. Equipment downtime is a major issue, often resulting in costly delays and reduced productivity. Using the wrong equipment is another common problem that can lead to inefficiencies, causing slower operations and increased wear and tear.
Improper handling equipment presents a serious safety concern as it poses risks to workers, including service personnel, and can often lead to accidents and injuries. Poor space management is another key challenge, as it can create bottlenecks and logistical nightmares, further complicating the materials handling process and reducing overall efficiency.
Different mining methods may also present unique challenges that need to be addressed, with strategic, customised solutions essential for optimising mining operations.
The main benefits of efficient materials handling
When you invest in innovative material handling solutions, the benefits go far beyond just efficiency.
Streamlining operations and reducing delays ensures that materials are moved quickly and effectively through processing plants, resulting in increased productivity. Safety is improved by using specialised equipment designed to handle heavy loads and harsh conditions, which reduces the risk of accidents and injuries.
By investing in quality products that offer greater durability and longevity and reliable equipment that requires minimal maintenance, cost savings are realised by minimising downtime and optimising labour costs.
Together, these advantages contribute to more efficient, safer, and cost-effective mining operations.
Essential equipment for efficient material handling in mining operations
Investing in the right equipment is crucial for optimising production, reducing costs, and improving safety in the mining industry.
Designed to improve safety and increase productivity, here are some of the material handling equipment essential for improving efficiency: Backsafe Australia offers storage that works hard to make your work easier. From warehouse pallet racking and cages to workshop cupboards, tool cabinets and everything in between, you'll find an innovative solution that improves productivity. The team at Backsafe understands the materials handling needs of one of the most complex industries. With a focus on efficiency, we have a wide range of Lifting equipment and strategic materials handling solutions such as Forklift Attachments and Scissor Lift Tables.
Our mining clients told us they needed mobile, motorised equipment that would enable workers to get more done more safely. So, we developed the Rhino range of robust powered trolleys and workstations with turn-on-the-spot, go-anywhere mobility.
Quote from customer: “The new warehouse trolley is a game-changer, seamlessly enhancing productivity and safety in one sleek design.” Jason B, Logistics Warehouse Manager, FMG Cloudbreak
In a world of heavy, wobbly, awkward mobile delineation stands, the Lemur – designed and prototyped with our mining clients – stands head and shoulders above the rest. The Lemur is built from the ground up to make setting up warehouse exclusion areas, delivery bays and any kind of safety zone quick and painless.“These are AWESOME!!! I had previously purchased something similar that’s heavy, with very poor ergonomics. It needed to be modified here to be more functional, but it’s still painful to use. The Lemur is lighter and easy to manoeuvre over the roughest of dirt/rubble surfaces.” - Mike C, Rio Tinto (Marandoo)
There are lots of transportation or logistics boxes out there for moving smalls to site. Problem is, most are over-engineered: heavy, awkward and, often, an accident waiting to happen. Our solution? The Mighty Mover. With its zinc-base, full-seam welding, powder-coated steel construction and 2.5T-rated load straps, it’s as tough as the remote mining conditions it’s built for.“Logistics boxes are notoriously awkward to move and access. The Mighty Mover’s human centred design makes moving and using it a one-person task, saving time and reducing injury risks.” - Damien Davies, Business Development Manager, Backsafe Australia
Backsafe's innovative material handling solutions in action
When we apply human-centred engineering principles to the briefs we receive from mine-site superintendents, it changes everything. Whether we end up recommending a standard product, a modified version or a custom-built solution, whether it’s a site-wide system or a single piece of equipment, the knock-on safety and efficiency benefits are clear and quantifiable.
But you don’t have to take our word for it. See for yourself. RIO Tinto Iron Ore - SEVEN TONNES SAVED at the 7 Mile warehouse.
When Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) asked us to design and build a parts storage and transportation solution for their Pilbara Rail network, we knew it would be an epic, collaborative journey. The ongoing prototyping and field-testing we’ve conducted with RTIO has enabled us to develop a super-robust, colour-coded system. It saves the Pilbara Rail team time, lowers WHS risk and makes transporting, tracking and servicing parts and components easier so they last longer in the tough Pilbara environment.
And it's safe to say the client couldn't be happier,“Well done, Gregor. You have already reduced manual handling at our warehouse by seven tonnes per person per year through innovation and engagement. It’s a massive ‘yes’ from me.” - Andrew Gurr, Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s 7 Mile Warehouse
Karara Mining - A Complete Material Handling Solution
Karara Mining required a complete solution for workshop, storage and safety equipment in their Minesite Warehouse, Workshops, Stores and Wash Down Facility in Perenjori.
Using human-centred thinking, we introduced a number of innovative solutions that improved both productivity and safety. The Mine Warehouse was fitted out with Pallet Racking & Longspan Shelving which were designed specifically to maximise storage capacity and incorporate a flow-through system facilitating maximum efficiency and productivity.
The workshop area was provided with customised heavy-duty workbenches and under-bench cabinets.
How technology is driving efficient mining material handling
Technology has brought significant advancements to the mining industry, leading to improved efficiency and safety in material handling operations. Automation, real-time monitoring, and 3D modelling are some of the advancements that have optimised operations, reduced human error, and increased efficiency.
The development of equipment with improved wear resistance, dust suppression systems, and renewable energy sources has also reduced environmental impact. By adopting these technological advancements, mining companies can improve their material handling systems, reduce costs, and achieve greater sustainability.
